programs you need to do the job, specific examples, how to use them, and how
often to use them.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or an equivalent level of
experience.
File Management
Most users' discomfort with computers arises from a lack of
experience and/or understanding of how a computer stores
things. This is true for documents, pictures, apps, music,
etc. All this is lumped under the broad heading of "file
management." In this class you'll learn how files are
stored, accessed, and manipulated in Windows 7 using Windows
Explorer. We will cover several methods to accomplish
the basic tasks of folder creation, copy, move, delete,
paste, cut, search, multiple select, etc. There should
ample time for practice.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or an
equivalent level of experience.
Hardware Basics
Have you ever wondered what's inside your computer case? Would
you like to know what the basic parts look like and how they
interact? What is in the CPU? What is BIOS? How do they get
a bus in there? What are they talking about in the ads for
the latest computers? This workshop is the place to learn the
answers. PC or Mac, tablet or desktop, the basic hardware
is often the same.
Prerequisite: none.
Mac 101
Come join the QCCC for our first lecture/workshop on an
Apple computer. We will demonstrate the basic operation of a
MacBook Pro 15" laptop computer, and how its software differs from

some insight into its operation. For those of you not using Apples,
you will be able to see what the fuss is all about. You may bring
your MAC's if you wish, but this class will be a lecture format.
Prerequisite: none.
Microsoft "Essentials"
Among other free programs it distributes, Microsoft provides a set
of useful applications under the name Windows Live Essentials, and
another called Microsoft Security Essentials. All of these run
identically on XP, Vista, or Windows 7 computers (except that Movie
Maker Live and Photo Gaklery are no longer available for XP). Windows
Live includes Photo Gallery for organizing and editing your photos,
and an e-mail program Mail. Purchasers of a new Windows 7 must
download these last two from Microsoft or another company, as they
are not necessarily included with Windows 7. Mail includes an
appointment calendar; while this can be found in Vista, it is not
in XP or Windows 7. Other components currently available are
MovieMaker, Blogger, and Messenger. The Security Suite includes
anti-virus and anti-malware blockers and scanners. We'll give an
overview of what these programs do, discuss how to download and
install them, and practice using some of the components.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic
computer skills.

This free Microsoft product is available in XP, Vista, and Windows
Live versions. Learn how to retrieve movies, edit, add sound, pan & zoom,
insert titles, and add special effects. Most of the ideas can be used on
still photos as well (which why Microsoft doesn't include Photo Story in
Vista). This program also produces wonderful slide shows. We will be
teaching the latest Windows Live version that runs on Vista and Windows 7
computers.
Prerequisite: File Management I or equivalent.
Paint
The Windows 7 version of Paint has the new ribbon interface and
this is a good program to practice on. Paint has been provided with
every Windows operating system since version 1.0 in 1985. It is a
graphics painting program that has many possible applications, such as:

Photoshop® Elements provides a complete workflow solution for working
with digital photos, integrating a wide range of digital editing, sharing,
and searching capabilities. Do you have hundreds or even thousands of
digital photos? This class focuses on photo organization including importing
photos, tagging by subject and even face recognition and rating your photos.
This method allows you to find your photos fast.
Prerequisite: You will find it quite useful if you have experience
with Windows Explorer prior to using Elements, as Organizer uses this feature
extensively. File Management I & II provide this background. Also,
taking one of the entry level image editing classes or some equivalent
editing experience is recommended.
Photoshop Elements II
In this second class you'll learn some of the powerful photo editing
capabilities in this software package from Adobe. Subjects explored will
include quick editing, selecting parts of your picture for special treatment,
using adjustment layers for flexibility in editing, merging photos, removing
wrinkles and spots, restoring old photos and using histograms for more
precise control.
Prerequisite: Photoshop Elements I. Also, taking one
of the entry level image editing classes or some equivalent editing experience
is recommended.
PSE Workshop - Guided Edit
Sometimes, editing photos can feel like such a chore, about as much fun as
doing laundry – fixing red eye, enhancing color, rotating, or maybe cropping
your ex-son-in-law out of a family photo. But PSE can also be a ton of fun!
Seriously. Not only that, but some of the fun stuff is also really easy. So let’s
have some fun with a few photos, while at the same time learning how easy it is to
create interesting, creative results with our photos. We’ll use PSE’s Guided Edit
feature, which is like having a teacher in a box. Guided Edit does just what it says.
It not only explains what your next step is, it picks exactly the right tool to use,
so you’re not left to guess which of its many powerful tools is the best one for
the result you want. We’ll use one or more video tutorials, and we’ll go through
three or four fun edits that will result in something interesting.
Prerequisite: some prior experience with Photoshop Elements
would be useful.
PSE Workshop - Layers
This is an opportunity to learn and practice a single aspect of the
Photoshop Elements program in one workshop namely "Layers." If you were
present at the February 2011 meeting program, you saw a demo of what layers
are about. Here's your chance to learn or review this type of material and
practice in a lab setting. A knowledge of layers can provide you with one
of the most powerful photo editing tools. No previous experience with
Photoshop Elements is necessary.
PSE Workshop - Selection
This is an opportunity to learn and practice a single aspect of the
Photoshop Elements program in one workshop, namely "Selection tools."
We'll work with the lasso, polygonal lasso, magnetic lasso, and magic wand
tools. Additionally, we may briefly cover the quick selection, selection
brush, and/or smart brush tools. Here's your chance to learn or review this
type of material and practice in a lab setting. No prior experience with
Photoshop is necessary.
Picture It! Express
This Microsoft program is no longer supported, but has been
freely distributed. It is a simple-to-use and reasonably powerful
photo editor and comes with Auto modes (the computer does the
"fixing") or Custom modes (you can tweak the brightness, contrast,
color, etc.). It has an excellent cropping tool, image rotator,
and resizer; finally, it can produce a few special effects. It
is not nearly as powerful for the more sophisticated user as Photoshop
Elements, but is much easier to learn for the average person.
Prerequisite: File Management I or equivalent.
Printing Pictures
This class will cover software, hardware and supplies needed to
print your digital images. Printing pictures without using your printer
will also be explored. You do not need to own a digital camera to take
this course.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic
computer skills.
Windows DVD Maker
This one-hour workshop covers the features of Microsoft's
DVD program, which is included with Vista and Windows 7. It
assumes you have produced a movie file from a camera or other
computer program, such as we cover in our Movie Maker class.
DVD Maker puts a professional "wrapper" on this with scenes,
notes, and music. The program then burns a DVD suitable for
playing on typical DVD players connected to a TV (or another
computer). The program's pluses and minuses are covered as
well as all the steps - there aren't that many!
Prerequisite: Photo Story or Movie Maker
are recommended.
Specialty Classes & Workshops
Burning CDs
Learn how to burn your own CDs and DVDs. Potential uses are: making quick
and simple manual backups of important files, creating your own music CD by
mixing songs from other CDs, and making a disc of photos or videos.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic
computer skills.
Card Workshop
Practice the basics of producing your own greeting cards, business
cards, and/or return-address labels. You'll review how to use clip art
and do simple image editing, as well as printing techniques.
Prerequisite: Clip Art Workshop.
Clip Art Workshop
Learn how to (1) find clip art on the internet, (2) download it into
the appropriate MS Word folder, (3) edit the images (resize, re-tint, etc.),
and (4) to paste it into documents.

Cox Services
This workshop will discuss and demonstrate some of the things you
can do with the computer services provided by Cox Communications if you
have an Internet account with them (mention will be made of Qwest too).
We'll focus on account setup and e-mail (webmail too), but we'll also
discuss their security package, webpage hosting, and online backups.
All of these features are included at no extra charge for most levels of
Cox contracts.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II.
Data Recovery and Secure Deletion
We'll look at freeware for recovering files from your hard drive
that have been accidently deleted, and the opposing kind of software
that deletes in such a fashion that data cannot be recovered. A related
topic is encryption that can protect your confidential folders from
prying eyes. Focus will be on the programs Recuva and Eraser that are
widely used. We'll also discuss how to effectively remove all information
from a hard drive prior to disposing of an old computer.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic computer skills.
Dual Monitors
If you haven't experienced using two monitors with your computer, you're
missing both a decidedly higher level of productivity - and just plain more
than double the fun. Imagine seeing your e-mail application on one monitor
and your browser on the other. Perhaps there is some text in the browser you
would like to include in the message you are composing. Just select it and
drag and drop to the message. It works the same for dragging some numbers
from a spreadsheet on one monitor into a Word document on the other. The
addition of a second display will significantly change the way you work with
your computer. This class shows you how it's done.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic computer skills.
eBay - Buying
Learn how to shop and buy on the largest on-line auction site. In this
course we look at the registration process, how to make good use of eBay's
browsing and search facilities, and the different ways to buy. We'll cover
bidding on auction sales, the buy-it-now option and classified listings. We
also look at various payment methods and facilities for tracking purchases.
Prerequisites: Computer Basics II, E-mail and Attachments, Internet Explorer
or an equivalent level of experience.
eBay - Pictures
When buyers browse categories or search for items, they see them with
Gallery pictures directly in search results. Your free Gallery picture
greatly increases the chances of a successful sale. Items with a Gallery
picture sell for significantly more than those without one. This class
provides instructions for preparing and editing your images, and then
uploading them to the eBay site.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II.
eBay - Selling
Learn how to sell on the largest on-line auction site. This course covers
all aspects of the selling process in the eBay environment. We will look at
registration & creating a sellers account, researching the market place,
selecting a category, selecting a selling format, dealing with shipping
costs, creating a listing, managing the listing, selling fees, communicating
with the buyer, and tips on shipping. We also review methods for receiving
payment and facilities for tracking sales.
Prerequisites: Computer Basics II, E-mail and Attachments or an equivalent
level of experience.
Financial Websites
This workshop could cover a specific website such as Yahoo! Finance and
Smart Money, or give a broad overview of the many web resources devoted to
financial topics. Learn how to find free information on up-to-the-minute
news, analysis, charts, and tables on all stocks listed on the New York Stock
Exchange or NASDAQ, research mutual funds, etc.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic
computer skills.
Fixing a Slow Computer
This workshop will include several approaches to fixing a computer that seems to be
running slow. Hardware and/or software can be the source of this condition. We'll look at
some simple tests you can make to diagnose problems, and suggest possible fixes.
When possible, we'll use software that comes with your computer or can be downloaded
at no charge.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic
computer skills.
Flash Drives
What is a flash drive? Why would I want one? How do I buy one? These are
questions we'll explore in this workshop. MP3 players like iPods and Zunes, as well
as digital cameras and cell phones, behave very much the same as flash drives, so
this class is useful for those devices as well. If you already have a flash drive, but
don't know how to use it, please bring it with you to the class.
Prerequisite: File Management I.
Getting Books for Your Kindle
Do you have a new Kindle Fire (or one of the other Kindles) and are having trouble
downloading books from the local library? John Muñoz from the Sahuarita Branch
of the Pima Library will give a one-hour class to help you. He will also cover
how to access Amazon's huge library of books, some of which are free. See
our website
for more information.
Prerequisite: It will be assumed that you already (1) have a Pima
County Library card and Pin, and (2) have registered with Amazon.
Google Earth
This free software package from Google not only gives you the same
features as their online maps do (roads, satellite photos, points of
interest, etc.) but can be "tilted" to provide 3-D representations of
terrain. We'll talk about how to get the software, set it up, and practice
a few basic techniques. The remaining time will be spent experimenting
with what it can do and how you might want to use it.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II.

session will be limited to 6 attendees, so be sure and sign up early.
Prerequisite: None.
MasterCook
The MasterCook software package provides a way for you to compile
all your recipes in one location on your computer. You will learn how
to set up your own personal cookbook, input recipes, plan menus, re-size
recipes and print recipes, shopping lists and cookbooks. The software
comes with step-by-step instructional videos from culinary experts, so
you can eliminate guesswork by watching complicated processes before
you try them.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II.
Media Player
Do you know that your computer can play CDs, "radio" programs, and many
kinds of movies? The Microsoft application Media Player that comes with every
Windows computer can do all of this and more. In this workshop we'll highlight
some of the easier to use features and discuss how to find "content."
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II.
Music Files
Learn what a music file is, how to acquire music from the Internet
or off your old tapes and records, and how to "rip" music from a CD. We'll
also use the freeware program Audacity to do simple digital edits.
Finally we'll cover how to burn music files to make a new CD with the
music in the order you want. These are the basic tools you'll need if
you want to add music to your slide shows or movies.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic computer
skills.
Networking Your Computers
Do you have more than one computer? Do you want to share your
internet connection with all of your computers? Wired or wireless? How
about sharing files and printers? Thanks to cheap and ubiquitous hardware
and fill-in-the-blanks wizards, just about anyone can combine two or three
computers running Windows into a reasonably secure local area network in a
matter of minutes. We will show you how in the Networking Your Computers
class.
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II and File Management

the mailbox.
Prerequisite: Quicken I or equivalent level of experience.
Scanning Slides
Do you have boxes of old 35mm slides (or color negatives) that you would
like to digitize for use on a computer or more permanent storage on CDs? In this
workshop we'll practice scanning 35mm slides into images using the Epson
Perfection V700 Photo scanner. Time permitting, we'll also briefly cover some
of the basic terminology and procedures for digitizing slides, and mention a few
of the tools you may want to use to "clean up" the resulting image. This will be
a "hands-on" workshop, so you'll be doing the actual scanning (with instructor
supervision).
Prerequisite: Computer Basics II or basic computer skills.
